Sheep Music 2008

This year Sheep Music is proud to present two fantastic weekends of music in the Sheep Music Dome which will be located for the second year at Presteigne's industrial estate. Further Out, a weekend of innovative and highly original music will happen on June 6th and 7th. The weekend, which started last year aims to bring to Presteigne artists who follow their own musical instincts and operate outside the mainstream of musical concept.
Rockin Roots on June 13th and 14th features Sheep Music favourites Nizlopi who shot to stardom with their hit single "The JCB Song" on the Friday evening and The Destroyers who will be headlining on the Saturday.

Further Out - Loon

Friday 6th June

Friday's concert features Loon. Loon are a diverse ensemble whose music has been used extensively for theatre and film. Loon's performances combine high artistic quality with humour and audacious musical content. Between them they sing and play a variety of instruments from the conventional (bassoon, ukulele, various brass and strings) to the more unusual (peanut tins, musical saw and zither). The result is something along the lines of Tom Waits meeting Massive Attack at a polish funeral in an Emir Kusturica film
They have worked with many musical luminaries and organisations including Nitin Sawhney, Scottish Ballet and Northern Sinfonia.

Further Out - Basquiat Strings

Saturday 7th June

Mercury award nominated Basquiat Strings are a quintet who perform with a percussionist. Their unique sound is inspired by the Hungarian string groups of Transylvania, the rich harmonies of Brahms and the wild and free compositions of Charles Mingus. Most of their music is written by cellist, Ben Davis who has performed with artists as diverse as Django Bates, Evan Parker and Kylie Minogue.
Their album, Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford was voted Sunday Times no.1 Jazz album of 2007.
Davis uses 20 pieces of taught strings to create a staggering range of rhythmic and tonal colours. They rock! The Guardian

Rockin Roots - Nizlopin and Martin Harley Band

Friday 13th June

Nizlopi need no introduction since their No 1 single but this inspired duo have been playing in Presteigne for quite a few years, graduating from Wednesday night in the Dukes arms to being headliners at last year's Sheep Music. The Martin Harley Band is less well known but is just beginning to get enormous amounts of radio play for their new album 'Grow Your Own'. They are best described as a band with a genuinely fresh take on 'the blues' and although soulful they play with confidence and a very un-English light touch.

Rockin Roots - The Bedouin Jerry Can Band and The Destroyers

Saturday 14th June

This is going to be a spectacular night of world music mayhem. The Jerry Can Band are Egyptian Bedouin tribesmen prone to cooking up coffee on stage and playing a weird selection of homemade instruments including jerry cans left over from The Six Days War. The Destroyers on the other hand are a veritable force of nature. A fifteen piece group based in Birmingham UK. A mix of recovering escapees from Birmingham's Conservatoire and musical firebrands from the Midlands, the band are a sight to behold. Fired by the energy of Eastern European music, The Destroyers diversify and build upon traditional arrangements, whilst delivering a wild stage show that has to be seen to be believed.

Tickets for Further Out and Rockin Roots from The Judges Lodgings.
