Aims
The organisation has been in existence for over 50 years. Our views are often expressed to local authorities, national bodies and our M.P. The Chamber is seen by Powys council as a valuable point of contact with the local business community. We also have close links with the local press and the tourist information office.
Our aims include:
- Providing a platform for members to air their views
- Providing a united voice on local issues
- Promoting the trading and visiting appeal of Presteigne
- Organising regular social activities for the community & the membership
Our views are often expressed to local authorities, national bodies and our M.P. We also have close links with the local press and the tourist information office.
It was the Chamber's responsibility for the original Town Guides that has brought about the launch of the Town's website and the re-launch of the revised and complementary Town Guide and Town Trail.
Events
We organise a number of the promotional and social events in the town.
Each year, the Chamber takes responsibility for the Christmas Lights and the annual Christmas Fayre; organises the Family Fun Day in May (in conjunction with the Town Twinning Association) and runs a number of other social and fund raising events throughout the year.
The Chamber also presents an annual prize, "The Judge's Gavel" to the Vintage Sports Car Club’s most promising young person, when the club visits Presteigne and the surrounding hills in October.
Volunteers to assist with all our events are always welcome, you do not need to be a member to help!
Membership
Our current membership represents a broad spectrum of local business people, from high street retailers & local businesses to other professional people in the Presteigne and the surrounding area. We encourage all businesses to join us because the more businesses that we represent, the greater the voice of business interests in the town. Membership does not mean that you must take an active part in every event, but the active membership does work hard but also have FUN.
We are always looking for new members and new ideas for the promotion of the town, the local area and the Chamber itself. Current membership cost is only £20 per annum. This amount includes updates through minutes & bulletins, general meetings, invitations to special events as well as representation to town & Powys councils and a contribution to the Festive lighting. Now, through our link up with the town site, you and your business can be part of a wider virtual community.

3. Classic Car Show
Despite the early morning rain there was a good turnout for the event.Although the attendance was approximately half of the vehicles booked in, there were still enough vehicles to make a good show and fortunately the sun came out in the afternoon, so everyone had a good day.
A letter of thanks is to be sent to Steve Weaverfor his last minute help.
Colin suggested that weneed to get a supply of good quality tent pegs and guy ropes/straps.
Also a letter of thanks to be sent to Theresa for the generous support as regards to the loan of the Scout Hut.
Rosamund announced the takings on the day from the gate were £746.00 with donations on the day of £72.95 and postcard sales of £26.50, giving a total of £845.45.
Donations and profits from the teas and breakfasts came to £157.42, giving an overall total of £1002.87.
Eddie Taylor and Glynnis raised £156.20 for the chamber by holding two raffles.
The expenses to be deducted contain expenses from the September event and some remaining expenses from June totalling £501.11, which leaves £501.76 profit.
In view of the above it was decided amongst all present not to deduct any portion towards insurance as it was felt that the £501.76 in entirety should go to the Air Ambulance but next year when the profits should be back to a slightly higher level then perhaps we should allot a portion for insurance.
5. Treasurer's Report
David informed us that the balance as per the 4th September was £939.71.
Since last month there has been a donation from Mrs Wood £50.
Withdrawal of £100.00 cash for the car show float and £50 petty cash (Car show expenses).

The available assembly room dates of 20th, 26th and 27th (Mon, Weds & Thurs) - Colin & Mrs Wood voted on having the 26th as the first choice.
Entrance fee of £7.50 was suggested and agreed as long as the quality food, wine and entertainment were available.
7. Christmas Street Party
Prior to the event, James will organise erection of the Christmas lights as per usual.
Ruby the Organ and Jack the Jester have been booked, Barry shall be santa and Santa's Grotto location to be arranged, if Jenny isn't able to let us use her room. Check to see if fire engine can come as usual.
Judy Ridgemen to help with toys for Santa.David and Barry to help set-up trees and lights. Rosamund suggested asking other businesses to set-up a stall along the street. Colin Felgate mentioned shortening it to 7pm, so the party would be 4pm-7pm. Tony Wood suggested inviting Knighton Primary School as well.
Arts & Crafts Fair is also going to be held on the same date as the Street Party 4-7.30pm.
8. April Presteigne Photo Talk by A. T.D. Evans
Rosamund mentioned as a reminder that we will be having another fundraiser in April. It shall be held in the Assembly Rooms and will be open to everyone. A. T.D. Evans has a large collection of Presteigne photos. Rosamund suggested the possibility of having Lorna to do tea and cakes.Time and date to be arranged.
9. Any Other Business
Update from Barry regarding the youth club
Youth club has been running 3 weeks and has been quite popular and successful since open day. Mums and Babies would like to use the Youth Centre on a Monday morning, so becoming a great asset to the community.
Rosamund has sent out an explanation regarding the new single use bag law.
Rosamund has been collecting a petition on the town parking law on behalf of the chamber of trade. The petition suggests a one hour stay on the High Street as well as a fee for one day stay in the paid car parking, which would greatly benefit the community. She has managed to get Kirsty Williams on board, so Gary Banks, Kirsty Williams and Hay-on-Wye are pressuring the council regarding parking issues.
First Aid (Advanced)- Amount of people eg. Car show 300.
The provision of a first aider was discussed for the Christmas Fair and any future events. Whilst both Barry and Amy hold basic first aid certificates, which covers us up to 50 people therefore it was felt that we need to look into Advanced First Aid training.
Rosamund suggested looking into the idea of the chamber paying for Amy to take advanced training as the cost of covering a 3 year certificate would be substantially less than paying for St. John's ambulance to attend individual events. It was agreed by all present that first aid was important and that we should be adequately covered for all future events. Advanced First Aid would cover us for over 100 people with no upper limit.
Rosamund asked Amy to provide her with details and cost for Advanced First Aid Training. We believe that Coleg Powys is offering a reduced rate of a £175, as opposed to the regular price of £320, for a 3 year certificate and everyone agreed that if this offer was still available we should take advance of it.
10. Date and Place of next meeting
